First
ever indoor rugby at Austasia
For the first time an indoor rugby carnival will take place at the
Austasia Sports and Leisure Complex, at Talawatugoda in February
2006.
It’s
another first by Austasia, after they staged the Indoor World Cup
cricket tournament here which turned out to be an instant success.
Defending champions Austasia retained the title defeating gutty
Sri Lanka in the final.
The
indoor rugby open tournament is the brainchild of old Peterite Dhakshita
Anthony (Managing Director Austasia) and former Sri Lanka and CR
and FC winger Wimal Epparachchi (manager). Wimal speaking to the
Sunday Times said, some leading rugby stalwarts of the past such
as Hisham Abdeen, Sheham Siddik, Ashan Ratwatte and Ivor Keerthipala
have given all encouragement and support to the President of the
Austasia Sports Council Sarath Kulasekera.
A team
will comprise of five players with two reserves. No tackling, no
linesout, no kicking. It will last 15 minutes with a minute’s
break and will be played in a carnival atmosphere under lights.
The competition is open to clubs, private sector and for old boys
of rugby playing schools.
