Newspaper
Society calls for security
The Newspaper Society in a statement on the alleged conspiracy to
assassinate Maharaja Group chairman Killi Rajamahendran said it
was concerned for the safety of the media personnel and called on
the government to ensure the rule of law in the country.
The
Newspaper Society is dismayed at the several attacks on and threats
to journalists and media houses in the recent past. The latest is
the revelation of a conspiracy to assassinate the chairman of a
media organisation controlling both TV and radio stations. If the
details are true then it bodes ill for media freedom in Sri Lanka.
We
hope that the government will take serious cognizance of the statements
allegedly made according to the report, and spare no pains in verifying
the truth of these statements.
The
Newspaper Society expresses its concern for the safety of all media
personnel and calls upon the government to ensure that the rule
of law prevails in this country, in keeping with the democratic
liberties and rights enshrined in the Constitution, stated the media
release.
