Better
protection for women and girls
With crimes against women and girls, reaching alarming proportions,
Minister of Child Development and Women’s Empowerment Sumedha
Jayasena has decided to initiate several programmes both educational
as well as those to provide better protection for them.
The
majority of killings and rape of women have been committed by drug
and alcohol addicts, a survey conducted by the Women’s Bureau
revealed.
During the first ten months of last year, 129 women and girls had
been killed and 1081 cases of rape were reported. Among the rape
victims, 692 were under the age of 18.
The
survey also revealed that grievous injuries have been caused to
621 women and girls during the same period.
A
Ministry official said it is planned to set up women’s and
children’s bureaus at all police stations throughout the country
in addition to the 36 such centres that are already in operation.
Educational
programmes to create awareness of crimes against women and children
will be conducted for students as well as parents, the official
said.
