Fifteen-year-old
Mowjood spearheads charge with nine wicket match bag
Royal over the moon
By Harry Jayachandra
Haroon Mowjood spun a web which a spider would have been proud of
at Reid Avenue yesterday. The fifteen-year-old right arm Leg Spinner’s
match haul of nine wickets helped Royal demolish St. Anthony’s
Kandy by 98 runs in their inter-school match.
On
a track that offered a bit of turn, the Kandy lads were all at sea
against Royal’s three-pronged spin attack. Continuing from
their overnight score of 55 for four, the Antonians were bowled
out for 122 in reply to Royal’s first innings score of 188
for 8 declared.
Spinners
DulanjanWijeratne (off spin). Mowjood and skipper Nadun Punchihewa
(left arm spin) did the damage with three wickets apiece. Royal
started their second innings on a shaky note with right-arm seamer
Peter Samarakoon ripping through the top order. He finished with
figures of 4 for 42. The repair job for the Reid Avenue boys was
done by Diran Warnakulasuriya and Punchihewa.
These
two put on 65 for the sixth wicket in double quick time. Warnakulasuriya
remained unbeaten on 39 while Punchihewa made 35. Set a target of
190 runs to win in a minimum of 48 overs, the Antonians were never
able to come to grips with Mowjood’s bowling.
Young
Mowjood was responsible for triggering the collapse just after tea.
The Antonians lost five wickets for just 18 runs and never recovered.
They were eventually bowled out for 91. Mowjood who also has the
flipper in his armoury finished with six for 14.
