Weather
gods answer their prayers -- Help save game against Nalanda
By Bernie Wijesekera
The Thomians could well do a New Year greeting card to the weather
God. Following on at 38 for 1 in their second innings things weren’t
looking that bright for the home team. But their saviour was at
hand. Rain and bad-light at the end of the sixth mandatory over
brought an early end to their game against Nalanda at Mt. Lavinia,
yesterday.
Continuing
from their overnight total of 27 for 1 in reply to the massive Nalanda
total of 305 for 5 declared on Friday, S. Thomas’ crashed
to 153 all out in their first innings with the Nalanda spin duo
– skipper Gihan Rupasinghe (3 for 30) and Amal Atapattu (5
for 29) not providing any respite to the batsmen. The only Thomian
batsman who had fight in him was Ashan Peiris who defied the Nalanda
bowlers to score an elegant 67 runs. At the end of the Thomian first
innings young left arm spinner Atapattu finished with impressive
figures of 25-10-29-5. The Thomians lacked batting skills on their
own backyard.
