Hartals
plague Trinco
The Alliance of Sinhala organisations in Trincomalee who staged
a three-day hartal said yesterday that it was concluded successfully.
President
Mahinda Rajapakse made a personal appeal to the organisers to end
the hartal yesterday, as it could jeorpadise the normality in the
eastern town. But the organisers claimed that they ended the protest
campaign only as scheduled.
The
North and East Sinhala Organisation, the Sinhala Reawakening Movement
and the Sinhala Emancipation Organisation, under an umbrella group
staged the hartal protesting the increasing number of attacks on
security personnel.
Their
actions brought Trincomalee and Kantale to a virtual standstill.
An organisation representative, Samantha Vijitha Kumara told The
Sunday Times that the President’s appeal was ‘casual’
and that they did not compel their membership to heed it.
Mr.
Vijitha Kumara said the President had given a firm commitment that
the LTTE and the Tamil Peoples’ Consortium would not be allowed
to disrupt public life in Trincomalee, and said Mr. Rajapakse had
to honour the promise.
However, the Tamil Peoples’ Consortium is to recommence its
hartal tomorrow which was suspended due to the Thai Pongal festivities.
