By Asif Fuard & Shelton Hettarachchi
Police counter-terrorist and explosive experts rushed to Nuwara
Eliya yesterday to investigate an explosion which left at least
one holidaymaker injured and caused damage to a guest house.
Police
said the explosion occurred when 23-year-old Ravindra Niroshana
from Kohilawatte, Angoda accidentally touched two wires while he
tried to take his mobile phone placed on a cupboard. The youth, who
was among a group of holidaymakers who had checked in at the guesthouse
on Friday, was undergoing surgery at the Nuwara Eliya hospital last
evening.
“The
two wires were connected to an explosive device through a nine-volt
battery and we believe it may have been left behind by the previous
occupants of the room,” Assistant Superintendent W. M. Chandrapala
said.
He
said bomb experts and STF personnel were summoned to the guesthouse
at Mahagastota, on the Nuwara Eliya- Badulla road to carry out further
investigations. Yesterday’s explosion came weeks after a police
intelligence officer was killed in Nuwara Eliya by a gang believed
to have been hired by the LTTE. The blast also caused panic among
holiday makers with many of them cutting short their stay in this
holiday resort, which witnessed several terrorist-related incidents
prior to the ceasefire agreement in 2002.
