Pay
taxes or forego properties: CMC
By Vanessa Sridharan
On top of the prevailing garbage crisis, the Colombo Municipal Council
(CMC) is facing an additional financial crisis caused by tax defaulters,
which could worsen its day to day performance.
The
CMC plans to auction 818 properties within the Metropolitan area
belonging to those who have defaulted in their taxes to the tune
of around Rs. 250 million.
“It’s
a big problem. Most of the properties belong to private companies.
For the last three years the Municipal Council is in debt for Rs.
250 million because some of the companies and sections of the public
are not paying their monthly taxes,” Deputy Mayor M. Azath.
S. Salley said.
The
CMC is to take action by acquiring the land of those who had been
avoiding tax payments for the last three years and auctioning them
if the arrears exceed over Rs.100,000.
“Businesses
and residents have avoided paying taxes to the Municipality. Unless
they pay their dues we will acquire their land and auction it,”
Municipal Commissioner Dr. Jayantha Liyanage told The Sunday Times.
Dr.
Liyanage further said that Municipal authorities had already sent
notices regarding the auctioning of these properties to the Government
Printer to be Gazetted.
‘Taxpayers
keep ignoring reminders even after “Red Notices’ are
sent to them. It is after the warnings of auctions that they pay
the dues,” Dr. Liyanage added.
The
Commissioner said that a 10 per cent surcharge would be added for
overdue payments. The CMC has put all development projects and services
on hold because of this financial burden causing even the regular
rate payers to suffer.
