Range
Bandara ordered to appear in court
UNP Puttalam district MP Palitha Range Bandara has been ordered
to appear in the Puttalam District Court before next Wednesday in
connection with the alleged assault on a 16 year old girl in the
Karuwalagaswewa area.
A
previous court decision by Puttalam District judge and Magistrate
Amal Tillakaratne for the MP to appear in courts before February
28 was revised after the Police made fresh submissions on Thursday
pointing out that an extended date could lead to tension and even
violence.
The
charge against the MP was that during a scuffle with a People’s
Alliance supporter in Karuwalagaswewa he had allegedly hit the girl
with a pistol.
However, in a statement made at the Karuwalagaswewa police station
Mr. Range Bandara had claimed she was accidentally hit during a
scuffle with the PA supporter identified as Prabath Asoka Siriwardena
who entered into an argument with him. He claimed the victim’s
brother had tried to grab the pistol from him.
The
girl was first rushed to the Tabbowa rural hospital in a state of
unconsciousness and thereafter transferred to the Puttalam, Chilaw
and finally to the Colombo National Hospital where she remained
till last Friday.
In a statement to the police the girl’s brother said the MP
had attempted to assault him, but the blow had struck his sister
injuring her.
Eight separate complaints have been lodged against the MP in police
stations in the area alleging threats to PA supporters.
