Buddha Jayanthi celebrations begin in India
The Maha Bodhi Society of India, which was started by Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala, held its inaugural ceremonies to mark the 2550 Buddha Jayanthi celebrations in Kolkata, India on January 7 amidst a gathering of several distinguished guests and speakers both from India and Sri Lanka.

The chief guest on the occasion was India’s Parliamentary Affairs, Telecommunication and Information Minister Priya Ranjan Das Moosajee while Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara delivered the inaugural speech at the function.
Mr. Lokubandara said the Sri Lanka Government and the President are taking steps to celebrate the Buddha Jayanthi celebrations at the highest level.

The welcome speech was made by India Maha Bodhi Society’s Chairman Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Modhi while world renowned author Deepak Chopra too spoke on the occasion and said Buddhism was the solution to many ills and unrest prevalent in the world today.

Kampuchean Ambassador to India who is also concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh Chon Bhunten who was guest of honour on the occasion said the 2550 Buddha Jayanthi was the right time for Buddhists to start spreading the message of compassion and tolerance preached by Lord Buddha.

Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera too addressed the function while the General Secretary of the India Maha Bodhi Society Dr. Dodamgoda Revatha Thera delivered the vote of thanks.
