Soldier
injured in grenade attack
A soldier was injured when an army sentry point in Chullipuram,
Jaffna came under a grenade attack last night, the military said.
The
grenade was hurled at around 7:30 pm from behind a building, paving
an easy get-away for the attackers, said military spokesman Prasad
Samarasinghe,.
“This
is a terrorist act,” he said, stopping short of blaming the
attack on the LTTE. The latest violence comes barely three days
after the government and the LTTE agreed to hold talks in Geneva,
breaking an almost three-year deadlock.
The
government has expressed hope that the wave of violence, which killed
more than 100 people last month, will cease after the agreement
to resume talks.
Although
sporadic attacks continue, there has been a sharp reduction of violence
since Thursday’s breakthrough.
