Historic
bridge is falling down
By Athula Bandara
An engineering feat by our ancestors is falling bit by bit due to
an apparent lack of interest by the Archaeology Department.
The
250-metre-long historic stone bridge over the Malwatu Oya was of
strategic significance during the Anuradhapura era as access to
the Kankasanthurai port was only through this bridge.
But
today restoration work on this engineering marvel, which began in
1998 as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of our independence,
has come to a standstill. Even the access road to the bridge has
been neglected and becomes inaccessible on rainy days.
Inspite
of its neglected state local and foreign tourists still visit the
spot to marvel at this stone monument. If restoration work does
not begin soon this bridge will soon be washed away by the Malwatu
Oya that flows below and a great engineering feat would be lost
to future generations.
