Albizia:
the shade tree from Java
Albizia is a large tree growing upto 20 metres or more. The trunk
is buttressed and is much branched. The branches appear in tiers
and are widespread making it an ideal shade tree. The trunk is silvery
grey and smooth.
The
leaves are small and bipinnate. Its flowers are greenish yellow
to cream and appear in spike like panicles. They cover the treetops
during April. The fruits are legumes which are flat and strap shaped.
Albizia
is commonly seen in forests in the wet zone and the lower montane
zone. In tea and coffee plantations, it is planted as a shade tree
and can be seen throughout the hill country. It is also useful for
reforestation since it plays a role in stabilizing and improving
the soil. Its wood is used for manufacturing tea chests and other
light products.
Albizia
is originally from Java and Malaysia. It has spread throughout tropical
countries since it is fast growing and provides timber. In Sinhalese,
it is known as the Rata Mara while its Tamil name is Vachi Maram
or Sahki Maram. The scientific name is Albizia Falcataria.
