Wijesiri
thwarts Nalanda bid
By Harry Jayachandra
Thursday was Australia day. Yesterday was captain’s day at
Campbell Place. Dharmaraja’s skipper Upesh Wijesiri almost
single handedly nearly guided his team to an improbable first innings
win over Nalanda. Wijesiri was involved in a second wicket stand
of 121 with wicket keeper batsman Buwaneka Ekanayake who made 37.
Chandimal
Ratnayake added some fireworks later in the order with a well crafted
50. Unfortunately it was not enough to prevent Nalanda from regaining
the Bandula Warnapura Trophy by s margin of 37 runs.
Left
Arm Off Spinner Amal Attapattu was the chief tormenter with 4 for
26. He was well supported by Gihan Rupasinghe and M. Weerasinghe
who weighed in with two wickets a piece.
Nalanda
305 for 9 dec. and 121 for 4 (T. Attanayake 17, P. Perera 32, G.
Rupasinghe 54, M. Warnapura 15 not out V. Navaratne 2 for 18)
Dharmarajah 53 for 3 overnight continued, 268 all out (Buwaneka
Ekanayake 37, Upesh Wijesiri 114, J. Ratnayake 50, M. Weerasinghe
2 for 54, A. Atapattu 4 for 26, G. Rupasinghe 2 for 82).
