A
right Royal recovery
By Bernie Wijesekera
Seventeen-year old Dilan Nanayakkara scored a memorable century
and saved the day for Royal to pull them out of a hopeless 110 for
8 at lunch to 239 for 9 declared on the first day of their match
against Ananda at Ananda Mawatha yesterday.
Batting
with sheer determination Nanayakkara hit a fine unbeaten 105 which
contained two sixes and ten fours made in 188 balls. His partner
was young Haroon Mowjood who made 39. The 9th wicket pair had added
124 runs and saw Royal making a remarkable recovery.
Earlier
in the day Ananda skipper Chathura Herath on winning the toss invited
the visitors to take the first lease of the wicket. At that point
it seemed that his decision had paid dividends when his opening
bowler Ishara Wickremasinghe picked two early Royal wickets with
only eleven runs on the board.
At the end of the day’s play Ananda in their turn had made
84 for no loss in 22 overs of batting.
