UPFA
takes polls rejection lists to courts
The United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) filed a petition in the
Court of Appeal against the rejection of the nomination paper for
the Gampaha District for local elections of March 30.
The
petitioner, UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha cited Elections
Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake, Assistant Commissioner S.M.
Gotabaya Jayaratne and the Returning Officer Kandy Elections office
as Respondents.
The
Petitioner stated that the nomination paper for the Udapalatha Pradeshiya
Sabha, Patha Hewaheta and the Gampaha Municipal Council that were
rejected vis-à-vis inadequacy with regard to the fundamental
right of the youth candidate.
The
petitioner further stated that no hearing was afforded to the petitioner
or his agent and that the nomination paper of the UPFA has been
vitiated by the failure to follow the fundamental principles of
natural justice and also offends the principles of reasonableness.
The
Returning Officer claimed that the youth was less than 18 years
of age as at June 1 and therefore he had rejected the nomination
paper.
