Athas
case:Postponed to June 1
The Appeal Court this week postponed the hearing of the appeal in
the case of criminal trespass, intimidation and unlawful entry with
weapons to the residence of The Sunday Times defence columnists
Iqbal Athas.
In
this case the two accused Squadron Leader Sanjeeva Kannangara and
Rukman Herath were sentenced in the High Court to nine years rigorous
imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 each. The second accused passed
away subsequently.
The
two accused were found guilty on two counts of committing the offence
of entering the Athas residence on February 12, 1998 and intimidating
Mr. Athas by threatening to cause grievous hurt by using a firearm.
Both
were sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment each on the
first count and two years rigorous imprisonment each on the second
count. They were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 and in
the event of default of the fine to serve one year’s rigorous
imprisonment.
The
Bench comprising Justices D.J. De S Balapatabendi and Eric Basnayake
postponed the hearing to June 1.
