Postal
votes of nullified polls destroyed
A pile of postal votes relating to the 2002 provincial council elections
was yesterday burnt at the Trincomalee Kachcheri on instructions
from Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake.
The
Elections Commissioner under the powers vested in him annulled the
2002 North and East Provincial Council elections. Though balloting
took place the volatile situation in the province at the time had
compelled the Elections Commissioner to nullify the polls.
Heaps
of uncounted postal votes which were stored in ballot boxes were
burnt at the Kachcheri premises under the supervision of the Trincomalee
District Assistant Election Commissioner M.M.S.K. Bandara Mapa The
police provided necessary security.
