No
recruits, no facilities but mail in plenty
Postmen at the Battaramulla post office have complained against
their increasing workload mainly because of the shortage of new
recruits and the absence of basic facilities.
The
quantity of mail for distribution has increased while the number
of postmen to do the job has decreased in comparison. A postman
attached to the Battaramulla post office charged that each postman
was compelled to handle the workload of two people.
“Number
of houses and business places has increased in the last few years
but no new employees have been recruited to meet the demand”,
he said. The postman said this discrepancy has resulted in people
not receiving letters on time and the recipients in turn complaining
regularly about the delay.
The
postman said there were 16 postmen at the Battaramulla post office
and this number has not changed since 1980 considering the number
of private institutions that have come up during the last ten years.
Another
postman said each one of them has to visit as much as 1000 houses
and business places daily and on most days they find this difficult
to manage and therefore distribute part of the letters on such days
and deliver the rest on the following day.
The
postmen also complained about the monthly bicycle allowance of Rs.100
given by the government calling it a very paltry amount. They claimed
it was high time the government increased this amount or provide
new bicycles as promised earlier.
