UNP
probe accuses Maharoof-Milinda group of deceit
By Santhush Fernando
The UNP Committee probing the circumstances that led to the rejection
of its list for the upcoming Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) elections
has held two of its Colombo MPs — Milinda Moragoda and Mohamed
Maharoof — responsible for the unauthorised removal of the
name of a senior candidate and introducing the name of one of their
supporters.
The
report which was due to be handed over to the party leader Ranil
Wickremesinghe yesterday by the committee comprising lawyer Mahinda
Haradasa and former treasurer Milroy Perera has cited Mr. Moragoda’s
private secretary S. Collure as the key suspect in the incident.
An
earlier report handed over to Mr. Wickremesinghe had been rejected
on the basis that the investigation was incomplete and the fact
that the inclusion of an under-age candidate had not been given
much attention, party sources said.
The
under-age candidate Supun Lakmal is the son of a municipal overseer
and Baseline Road Ward organizer said to be a close aide of Mr.
Maharoof. The Retunring Officer upheld an objection that he had
not reached 18 as per the electoral list of 2004, but party lawyers
argued otherwise before the Court of Appeal.
Although
Mr. Maharoof had reportedly requested Mr. Wickremesinghe not to
include veteran municipal councilor T. M. Sangadasa’s name,
the party's nomination board had agreed that all sitting MMCs be
included on the list and given an opportunity to re-contest if they
so wished.
But
it was Mr. Sangadasa’s name that the suspect had tippexed
and replaced with the name of Mr. Lakmal. Meanwhile, party secretary
N.K.K.V. Weragoda had offered to step down following the rejection
of the list as it was he who signed the nomination papers.
He
had not queried the tippexing of Mr. Sanghadsa's name or the inclusion
of an under-age candidate as he was busy with Moratuwa organizer
G.L.Peiris, preparing the list for the Moratuwa Municipal Council.
UNP leader Wickremesinghe is reported to have advised Mr. Weragoda
not to resign as the probe was pending.
