They say…
By The Scribe
Ever wondered how often in everyday conversation we find ourselves saying, “They say that a glass of wine a day is good for you” or “they say that early morning is the best time to study as your mind is fresh.” I mean, ‘they’ seem to be specialists in virtually every field. From doctors to dieticians, psychologists to astrologists, political analysts to economists and scientists, etc. ‘they’ seem to have it all covered.

I’ve always found it so interesting to observe with what confidence and conviction people make references to these ‘elusive experts.’ It comes almost naturally to most, who simply add a “they say this” or “they say that” to further validate their case. What’s even more amazing is how the recipients of this vital information rarely question the authenticity of the source and virtually hang on every word being dished out to them. (I, myself have been at the receiving end of many such words of wisdom, ‘they’ have shared with the world over time.)

Furthermore, these recipients feel it’s their civic duty to share this valuable information with dozens of other ‘privileged souls,’ who in turn keep the ball rolling by inadvertently contributing to the ‘Great Grapevine’ by spreading the word to as many as possible.

Regardless of the subject of discussion, ‘they’ have an opinion on every imaginable topic in the galaxy, and someone somewhere has heard of it, and just has to share it with us less enlightened ones. Be it advice on relationships, health, stress, eating habits, politics… ‘they’ know it all.
Makes you think how easy it is to feed/manipulate the masses into believing something to be fact. All it takes is someone able to easily convince others, a piece of information that is relevant, timely and relatively believable, and you have your audience in your pocket.

More often than not, what ‘they’ say is somewhat remotely close to the truth, and sometimes it is completely the truth. It’s just that sometimes, people read, watch or hear about something from somewhere, and just cannot for the life of them remember where or who said what. That’s when ‘they’ take pride of place. What would we be without ‘them’? Only ‘they’ can tell…
