Kadir
case: Maharoof quizzed on land gift
UNP Colombo District MP M. Maharoof has been questioned by Colombo
Crime Division (CCD) officers for his alleged links with a key suspect
in the Lakshman Kadirgamar murder case.
Mr.
Maharoof was questioned and his statement recorded by CCD officers
after the gardener of Mr. Kadirgamar’s neighbour Lakshman
Thalaysingham, confessed that Mr. Maharoof had arranged the donation
of state land to him.
The suspect, Muttiah Sahadevan alias Devan, earlier living in the
Wanathamulla and Grandpass areas had been donated the land during
the tenure of the UNP Government between 2001 to 2004 when Mr. Maharoof
was the Urban Public Utilities Minister.
The
land in extent of about five perches gifted to the suspect was located
close to Polhengoda, Narahenpita. A small house has been constructed
on the land. Devan was among several beneficiaries who received
land from Mr. Maharoof.
The
Sunday Times learns that in his statement to the CCD Mr. Maharoof
had said that the suspect was known to him over a long period and
was involved in his election campaign. However, he said that the
donation had been made many years before the assassination.
The
suspect, hailing from Passara, Badulla was responsible for allowing
the LTTE suspects involved in the assassination to enter the Thlaysingham
residence at Buller’s Lane in Colombo from where Mr. Kadirgamar
was shot.
The suspect along with two others are in remand custody while the
LTTE suspects involved in the assassination are yet to be arrested.
