Why
the crackers?
The judgment on the UNP petition challenging the rejection of its
Colombo Municipal Council nomination list was due to be delivered
on Thursday but was postponed to Friday and then once again postponed
for tomorrow. However a UNP ‘heavy weight’ from Colombo
district who was in the centre of the nomination rejection controversy
got his supporters to be prepared with a large amount of crackers
to be set off once the judgment was delivered but had to postpone
it on the first day and the following day as well. But what some
other party members are asking is why the man is getting ready to
celebrate something he was responsible for creating in the first
place.
Conflict
of interests hit bus depot
A senior Central Transport Board official is allegedly making frequent
visits to the Dambulla bus depot and instigating the bus drivers
there to go on strike. The reason behind this move is said to be
that his better half is operating five private buses on the 968
bus route between Dambulla and Kandalama and if the state run buses
go on strike, the only ones to profit would be the private operators.
What
insiders are asking is how this kind of behaviour by CTB high-ups
will help make the state sector transport system a boon to commuters.
Break
from elections, not work
Constitutional Affairs Minister D.E.W.Gunasekera who was present
at a press conference last week at the SLFP headquarters said that
after the March 30 local government elections, another poll was
not anticipated till 2009 and hence the politicians would get a
long break. Minister Susil Premajayantha who was seated next to
him was quick to remind him that the break was only from an election
and not from work. Yes, they all will need to work if they are thinking
of seeking re-election even in three years time.
