President felicitates Asgiri Mahanayake Thera on 77th birthday

In a felicitation message on the 77th Birthday of the Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiri Maha Vihara the Venerable Sudharma Chakravarti Mahaupadaya Udugama Sri Ratanapala Thera, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the Venerable Thera was an example to the Maha Sangha .

In his message he said the Venerable Monk holds an exalted position not only in Sri Lanka but throughout the world, yet he leads a life of humility.
The President said the Venerable Thera always gave him advice on how best to carry forward the government’s peace efforts.The President wished the Mahnayake Thera the blessings of the Triple Gem and the Devatha's.

A special Pooja was held on Friday at the Sri Dalada Maligawa to bless the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter. The Anunayaka Thera of Malwatta Chapter the Venerable Rajakeeiya Panditha Niyangoda Vijithasir and the Anunayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter the Venerable Galagama Attadassi Thera led the Maha Sangha of both Chapters in chanting seth pirith in the presence of the Sacred Tooth Relic enshrined in the inner Shrine Room.

President Rajapakse further stated in the message sent to the Venerable Mahnayake Thera of Asgiri that , it is not only in Sri Lanka, but the Thera is held in high esteem for his learning of the Dhamma, but also in the Buddhistic work.

Earlier on Friday the Diyawadena Nilame Pradeep Dela Bandara presented the Mahanayake Thera with a plaque depicting the Sri Dalada Maligawa, as a token of appreciation.
