By Shane Seneviratne
A new-born was allegedly snatched by a nurse from the Peradeniya
Teaching Hospital while the mother was recovering from a caesarian
operation, Police said yesterday.
The
nurse had allegedly sold the baby to a businessman’s family
in the Wattegama area. She was arrested and a police team was last
night looking for the businessman, Headquarters Inspector Saman
Yatawara told The Sunday Times.
The
infant’s mother after regaining consciousness had complained
that her baby was missing. Her family members had lodged a complaint
with the Peradeniya Police.
A
security guard had confirmed seeing a nurse in uniform carrying
a baby away. The nurse after allegedly handing over the baby had
returned for duty. She was arrested inside the hospital.
