Marians crash as SSC take the plum
By M. Shamil Amit
SSC outclassed Chilaw Marians by an innings and 17 runs with one
day to spare to clinch the Premier League title in the final concluded
at the Colts grounds yesterday. SSC were sitting pretty at the end
of the second day’s play having posted a massive 426 for 9.
Resuming from the overnight score yesterday morning they went on
to add a further 16 to end their innings on 442. This was in reply
to the Marians score of 172, which gave them a lead of 270 runs.

Marians batting the second time put themselves in a spot as five
of their top order batsmen were sent back to the pavilion with just
62 runs on the board. They lost three more wickets for the addition
of 59 runs and were tottering on 121 for 8. But a calypso style
batting from Chinthaka Perera who made a 35 ball knock 57 inclusive
of two boundaries and seven towering sixes and another knock of
90 from Praneeth Jayasundara which had 11 boundaries and four sixes,
denied an early victory for SSC as the duo put on a 98 run stand
for the ninth wicket to help Marians reach the 200 run mark.
SSC’s
win was further delayed by the last pair stand of 34 runs between
Jayasundara and Dinuk Hettiarachchi before Jayasundara got himself
out with 20 overs still remaining for the day. Suraj Mohamed ended
as the top bowler with 5 for 78. Earlier the SSC innings was capitulated
by 103 from Avishka Gunawardena and was supported by half centuries
from Jeewan Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera, and Kaushal Silva.
