JVP
says they are under SLFP attack
A JVP member was seriously injured when SLFP supporters attacked
him in Anuradhapura yesterday, Police said. The JVP member identified
as Bandula Marambage was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital
in a serious condition.
A group
of supporters of Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayake and provincial
council minister H. B. Semasinghe were involved in the attack, JVP
parliamentarian Ranaweera Pathirana charged.
Yesterday’s
attack was the latest in the series of clashes between the SLFP
and the JVP in recent weeks. On Friday in Ambalantota, JVP members
who were returning after a lodging a complaint at the police station
were allegedly attacked by SLFP supporters. Later, Deputy Minister
Mervyn Silva and his supporters had carried out a protest in the
area and police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
On
Wednesday, an SLFP candidate and his supporters allegedly assaulted
a group of JVP supporters in Kesbewa. Three JVP members were hospitalised
following the attack. In Elahera, a JVP candidate and a provincial
councillor were attacked allegedly by SLFP supporters led by a candidate.
