Passing
the buck over Akuregoda Road
By Hiranthi Fernando and Dhananjani Silva
I read with interest a recent letter to you with regard to the condition
of the Akuregoda Road. As a frequent user of this road, I can testify
to the wretched condition of this stretch of road, where one travels
from pothole to pothole.
The Sunday Times inquiry has drawn the usual response of passing
the buck, backwards and forwards, between the Pradeshiya Sabha and
the Road Development Authority (RDA).
Road
users are only too aware of the pathetic attempts made to patch
up some small sections of the road from time to time. The work is
carried out in a way, which seems to encourage the same work to
be done repeatedly. Possibly there must be a very rich and happy
contractor somewhere.
The
Pradeshiya Sabha is UNP controlled. The UNP prides itself on being
management oriented. If this is the way the UNP sees management
and service to its rate payers, I for one, shall look elsewhere
to cast my vote.
Some of the most rapidly growing development of housing is within
this Pradeshiya Sabha, but the thought to provide a decent infrastructure
for the development remains a pipe dream.
At
least the main Akuregoda Road should merit immediate and proper
attention. Over to you Mr. Muditha Peiris. It is not good enough
to say that this is not your problem. If you want to wash your hands
off it publicly, finalise the handing over to the Road Development
Authority, from where we can press for its repair. Leaving the matter
in limbo serves no purpose to anyone.
