End
of the year at RCGC
In a fun and pleasure friendly contest in the last month of stewardship
of the President and Captain of the Royal Colombo Golf Club, a 4-ball
encounter ended in a smashing victory for the President’s
team, and Shiran de Soysa, the President, was beaming all afternoon
relishing the victory. Elmo de Silva, the Captain, was not available
so nobody knows his reaction to the humiliating defeat, but a wag
tells me that he took it in style with smiles.
Awards
After a rushed session at the 19th over an elastic hour, the participants
and invitees sat for lunch and the Awards Ceremony. Superbly organised
by the General Manager, Chula de Silva, the presentation looked
great, but most unfortunately the afternoon was thin and several
winners were not present to collect their prizes. The opportunity
was also taken to distribute awards to winners of several events
through the past six months.
Unfortunately,
the whole presentation was colourless despite Ajantha Mylvaganam’s
spirited effort to prop up the proceedings. Attractive 10-handicapper,
Dilani de Zoysa, was the only bright spark that added some colour
to the proceedings when she walked up three times to collect awards
she had picked up in recent events. Winners must be reminded that
it is absolutely discourteous not to be present at awards ceremonies,
and it is more discourteous when apologies for non-availability
are not passed on to the organisers.
A.G.M.
The 127th Annual General Meeting takes off early next week
with some degree of controversy. I understand the Captain was not
allowed his prerogative of choosing his own team for the ensuing
year. He obviously must be grossly disappointed that his team will
not be of his own choosing. I understand some nominees are pretty
good and some pretty dull and negative. They often say “you
get what you deserve” and I sincerely hope for the good of
Royal Colombo that those who moved in on account of seniority in
the Committee and nothing else will move out and help steady the
boat.
I
feel strongly that the whole system of elections must be looked
into with considerable care, leaving no room for elections based
on seniority but on the basis that the nominee is knowledgeable,
is acceptable, has stature and above all has the capacity to go
up the ladder and eventually lead the Club from the front. Seniority
alone is absolutely no qualification.
