SSC
takes Premier League after nine years
By S.R. Pathiravithana
It was a long wait, but for them it was worth it. SSC had clinched
the Premier League division one championship after nine long years.
The last they won it was in 1997.
This
time’s achievement has a special flavour for them. This year
they won it without the services of either Sri Lanka skipper Marvan
Atapattu or his national deputy Mahela Jayawardena for any of the
matches.
Besides
this they also did not have the services of many of their other
seniors in most of the games owing to the national call.. Nevertheless
SSC had one significant achievement. In the final round SSC registered
eight outright wins on the trot while dropping only one match in
the initial round. Inspite of this SSC also won the twenty-twenty
tournament organized by the SLC.
Coming
back into the premier league tournament, off spinner Suraj Mohammed
who was adjudged the best bowler of the tournament bagged 55 wickets
in nine matches and booked his passage to Bangladesh with the Sri
Lanka ‘A’ side. Another feature that also stood out
for them was the timely century by skipper Avishka Gunawardena in
the final.
Lanka
Bell has been backing SSC’s cause for cricket for the last
three years with a generous package. The team was hosted to a reception
at the SSC pavilion on Thursday.
