Pocahontas the True Princess
By Natasha Fernandopulle
Lyceum International School, Nugegoda, will be presenting 'Pocahontas the True Princess' this April. The star, Pocahontas, will be played by 11 year old Aamina Mohammed. She loves acting and has been doing so since she was around seven and a half years old. She feels she is "quite ready" to play the part.

John Smith is played by Joshua Karpinski (11). He is Pocahontas' interest. It is one of the lead roles. "I get a lot of respect from my friends", he said, when asked about his character. He has acted before in a few school plays so he said that this is quite easy. He said he had no clue, if he would get chosen for the part, "so when the teacher chose me, I was surprised because there were people older than me!" In playing this part he said that more than the acting it is the singing that is tough for him, because he has to carry long notes.

Onella Piyatilake (11), plays Grandmother Willow. "I am one of the main characters and also Pocahontas' best friend. She always talks to me when she has problems", she said. "I love to sing," Onella said, and she does have a beautiful voice. She feels comfortable playing the part.

Shiran Fernando (14), will be Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas' father. My favourite part is the end war scene. The character is more like my character", he said, adding, "he is a strong character, he is the leader of his people." He also went on to say that he has to not just act but there are singing parts as well. But he prefers acting to singing!

The younger kids, are five, six, seven and eight years old and will be the river voiles. In chorus they said, what they like most is having to "stay with Pocahontas!" adding, "We have to dance and sing," they said enthusiastically. A few of the other seven and eight year olds, will be playing the animals in the woods. "We like to be animals and we sing and talk" they said. They went on to explain, "we are like magical animals… because we can talk!"

The play is directed by Mrs. Odile Melder and will certainly be a magical one… So for all of you little ones interested in a magical evening of music, song and dance, make it a date on April 7, 8 and 9, 2006 at Lyceum International School. Tickets will be available at the school.
