American
Centre screens Oscar acclaimed
'Sophie's Choice' an academy awarded movie will be screened at the
weekly movie screening at the American Centre on April 4 Tuesday
at 6.30pm.
Faithfully adapted from Willian Styron's best-selling novel, Alan
J. Pakula's handsome production charts the course of an eccentric
and intense love triangle in 1947 Brooklyn, New York.
Meryl
Streep won an Academy Award for her carefully nuanced performance
and perfect accent as Sophie, a Polish survivor of WWII concentration
camps whois privy a devastating secret. The film was nominated for
the Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design
and Best Original Score at the Academy award.
The
film is told through the eyes of aspiring Southern author Stingo
(Emmy-nominated Peter MacNichol of TV's Ally Mcbeal) who moves to
New York and strikes a friendship with Sophie and her boyfriend
Nathan--played by Kevin Kline in his debut screen role.
The
sunny streets of Brooklyn, just after World War II. A young would-be
writer named Stingo (Peter MacNicol) shares a boarding house with
a beautiful Polish immigrant Sophie (Meryl Streep) and her tempestuous
lover, Nathan (Kevin Kline); their friendship changes his life.
Director
Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men) provides a steady, intelligent
path into the harrowing story of Sophie, whose flashback memories
of the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp forms the backbone of
the movie.
Streep's exceptional performance--flawless Polish accent and all-won
her an Oscar, and effectively raised the standard for American actresses
of her generation. No less impressive is Kevin Kline, in his movie
debut, capturing the mercurial moods of the dangerously attractive
Nathan.
The
two worlds of Sophie's Choice, nostalgic Brooklyn and monstrous
Europe, are beautifully portrayed by the gifted cinematographer
Néstor Almendros. Meryl Streep not only learned a Polish
accent but also learned how to speak German. Rest of the cast include
Peter MacNicol and Rita Karin. Entry for the screening will be free
and seating is on first -come, first-served basis. Film fans are
expected to bring their photo ID for entry.
