Taking you home…
As the sun set, the Oak Room of Cinnamon Grand filled with country music lovers all eagerly waiting to hear the tunes that were close to their hearts.
It was that time of the year again. Time to head out for this year’s Country Roads... Having been to this concert for the past three years, I was definitely very excited to hear good old country music and some.

The soul must come from you, said the publicity... and there we were joining in for the initiative to provide one million mosquito nets to needy children.
Host for the evening Kumar De Silva gave the audience a brief glimpse into the history of Country Roads. The Country Music Foundation, initiated seventeen years ago, focused on needy children and the crucial issues affecting their lives. The Country Roads Concerts, an annual event for the past fourteen years, have been based on many themes with special messages to raise awareness on issues such as education, health, child labour, sexual exploitation, poverty and deprivation.

With many artistes in the likes of Triveni with Krishna, Ravibandu and Derek, Mariazelle, Tucker Livingston, the Mavericks and Cosmic Rays coming together to perform for the evening, the concert was bound to be a success. All their performances were noteworthy, and those of you who were not there missed a great concert. Starting off the evening were six choristers from Museaus College singing “Country Roads” accompanied by Feizal Samath, president of the Country Music Foundation. If there was to be a list of reasons why no one should miss this concert, the duo Dirk Maverick and Steve Burn should top it. With more than ten years of experience at Country Roads, the Mavericks duo with their cowboy hats and their vibrant personalities made their performance so lively, interacting well with the audience and even getting them to sing along.

It was then time for yet another group of veterans of Country Roads… Cosmic Rays. After yet another memorable performance by them, they then joined the rest of the stars to sing Country Roads. As the final words of “Country Roads take me home…” were sung, the crowd joined in to sing away into the night.
Walking away that evening, it was nice to see people actually making contributions to help this cause. It sure was a night to remember and as they all say, you have to be the change you wish to see in the world.
