Police
dragging feet on fatal assault: JVP
By Nalaka Nonis
The JVP has accused Anuradhapura police of being slow to apprehend
supporters of a deputy minister and a provincial minister in Anuradhapura
who allegedly killed one of its supporters.
JVP
Parliamentarian Ranaweera Pathirana told The Sunday Times that his
party had complained to President Mahinda Rajapaksa about the lacklustre
interest shown by police to arrest the suspects of the killing of
Bandula Marambage (42).
Bandula
Marambage was allegedly severely assaulted by the supporters of
deputy minister Duminda Dissanayake and provincial minister H.B.
Semasinghe on March 24 when he was coming home with some others
after attending a political meeting.
The
victim who was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital from
Anuradhapura died on April 4 due to injuries suffered. Mr. Pathirana
claimed that police were initially not interested to take down the
complaint regarding the assault and instead entertained a complaint
from the suspects.
However
the police finally had to record the complaint, he said. He said
that though police had arrested three out of six suspects, action
is still proceeding slowly.
