Plea
to put off Vesak week polls
Deshabhimanaya Peramuna, a non-political organisation, has appealed
to the Election Commissioner to further postpone polls for the 22
local councils where elections were not held on March 30 due to
legal and security reasons as it would disrupt the Vesak celebrations.
The
election for the 22 local councils has been scheduled for May 18.
The group’s spokesman and senior minister Dinesh Gunawardena,
said that they would meet the Elections Commissioner tomorrow to
request him not to hold the election during the Vesak week from
May 12 to 19.He said this year’s Vesak ceremony was special
to Buddhists worldwide as they commemorated the 2550 Buddha Jayanthiya
and therefore a peaceful atmosphere should prevail for people to
celebrate it.
“We
don’t want political animosities, disputes and public meetings
during the Vesak week and instead we like to have more religious
and Vesak festivals,” Mr. Gunawardena said
