Diplomatic
post for suspect Sandagiri
Admiral Daya Sandagiri, Chief of Defence Staff, who faces a Commission
of Inquiry for alleged bribery and corruption, is to be given a
diplomatic posting, The Sunday Times learns.
The
former Commander of the Navy is likely to be named Sri Lanka's Ambassador
to Pakistan. This is to replace retired Lieutenant General Srilal
Weerasuriya, a former Army Commander who is now in Islamabad on
an extended term.
It
was only two weeks ago that Justice Nimal Gamini Ameratunga, a Supreme
Court Judge, was named to probe procurement of "high value”
weapons, military equipment, materiel and services between 2001
and 2005 - the period when Admiral Sandagiri was Commander of the
Navy.
The
Commission has already called for public representations. It will
close on April 17. Thereafter, it is to announce a date by which
inquiries will begin in camera.
