A
holiday hideaway
Set
in a sprawling 12-acre compound against a serene backdrop of low
hills, the Kukuleganga Holiday Resort offers attractive facilities
to holiday-makers.
The sixty-four well equipped chalets are of three types. The 18
B-type chalets have three bedrooms, one double and two single and
two bathrooms all comfortably furnished. Each chalet has a verandah,
sitting room, dining room and a pantry equipped with electric kettle,
microwave oven, fridge/freezer and cutlery and crockery. A room
and a toilet are also available for a domestic. Requirements for
tea and coffee are provided.
Each
chalet is fitted with a TV. And it comes at a cost for Rs. 4,000
per chalet, while meals are Rs. 400 for breakfast and Rs. 450 each
for lunch and dinner. The smaller C type chalet has a double room
and a single room while the A type has one bedroom. They are similarly
equipped except for the domestic’s room which is available
only in the B type. The C type charges are Rs. 3,500 and the A type
Rs. 2,500.
Meals
are served in a central dining area, with the bar adjoining. A long
verandah overlooks a swimming pool and baby pool. Other facilities
available are gym, squash courts, tennis and volleyball courts,
pool table, common TV room, internet café, mini mall and
laundry facilities.
The
well-run resort is managed by a staff of 22 army personnel and 31
civilian employees. Manager Col. Bimal Withanage said he has plans
to introduce many additional facilities such as satellite TV, boating
and water sports too by enlarging a stream which runs near the complex.
One area has been identified for barbecues and campfires. '
The
resort is especially attractive to nature lovers and bird watchers,
Col. Withanage said. As the Sinharaja rainforest lies just across,
many birds are seen around the resort, he added. He plans to root-ball
and bring in more trees to the central area of the complex around
the pool and the chalets.
The resort is well occupied during weekends. Many groups also come
for the day as there are many places of interest close to the resort.
One
such place is Fa-Hsiengala cave temple connected with the Chinese
explorer priest Fa-Hsien who is believed to have stayed here during
his visit to Sri Lanka in the 5th century AD. It is the largest
natural cave identified in the country.
