Eagle lands Governer's Cup 2006

Double Eagle owned by Monaro India which is a joint syndicate between
an Indian and one of Sri Lanka's top owners Ajantha de Zoysa trained
by former top jockey S.D. Lalith and ridden by Sri Lankan jockey
S.D. Janaka lifted the prestigious Governer's Cup held at the Nuwara
Eliya horse racing course yesterday giving the owner and jockey
their first ever success of the most expensive horse race to be
held in Sri Lanka.
In
fact the eight race programme belong to this trio as they swept
the board winning three events. After winning the big event they
went on to clinch the remaining two races. Governer's Cup winner
Double Eagle cantered to the post winning the event by over five
lengths. He had the race in his pocket once he took the lead from
the fifth furlong of the eight furlong event leaving the other nine
runners way behind. Last years winner Hi Gorgeous and Almond were
the first to lead but fell back with Almond coming in third place.
Owner
and trainer Anura Delgoda and Sridher Selvaratnam too had a successful
day with a back to back double winning the second and third events
of the day. The first event for the day went to Dhammika Attygalle
owned Early Light trained by Sridher Selvaratnam who also had three
wins for the day. The fourth and fifth events were won by owners
Mrs. Chamari Jayaratne and Anuka Soza. Of the three Indian jockeys
M.D. Kareem and H. Raja saddled a winner each.
