rugby season gets off to a start on May 27

The much-awaited Inter- Club rugby season for the ‘Caltex
league 2006’ will be worked off from May 27. In the initial
game the “Red Shirts” led by Pavithra Fernando will
clash with the solders at Longdon Place.
On
the same day the defending champions Kandy SC, led by the national
skipper Sajith Malikarachchi, will travel down to Colombo to meet
the Sailors at Welisara. On the following day Havies will host the
CH & FC.
In
a major change in the club rugby format the season will be shorter.
In the first round six teams will battle it out for the Cup segement.
After the initial round the top four teams will play for the Cup,
the next four teams for the Plate and the last four teams will battle
it out for the Bowl.
The
second round will commence on June 30 and will conclude on July
15. Meanwhile Sri Lanka who are just four games away from the Rugby
World Cup 2007 in France will host China on April 29 at the Longdon
Place and then two weeks later will go on tour to meet Hong Kong
in their qualifying round matches. If the Lankans top this group
they will then earn promotion for the Group where they are likely
to meet the Asian giants - Japan and Korea.
