Lanka
reiterates concern over shipping canal project
Sri Lanka has reiterated to India during a meeting of technical
experts of the two countries the importance of “effectively
addressing the environmental concerns” generated by the Sethusamudram
project.
The
Sri Lankan views were expressed when the two countries held the
third meeting of technical experts on the Sethusamudram Ship Canal
Project (SSCP) on Friday in Colombo, the Foreign Ministry said.
The
Sri Lankan delegation headed by SSCP Advisory Group chairman A.Hewage
said the two countries must “jointly ensure that the construction,
maintenance and operation of the canal occur in a manner that is
not detrimental to the sensitive environment of the area, its flora
and fauna”. The Sri Lanka delegation had also presented scientific
data it had gathered.
A
summary of the suggestions for the mitigation of any adverse impact
arising from the implementation of the SSCP was handed over to the
Indian delegation, the release said.
