Double
Eagle gives owner and trainer their first success
It was a dream come true for owner Ajantha de Zoysa who at last
tasted success after a wait of nearly two decades when his horse
Double Eagle also under the colours of Monaro India clinched the
Governer’s Cup held at the Nuwara Eliya horse racing track
last week.
It
was the masterpiece of riding by jockey S.D. Janaka who whizzed
past the other nine opponents from four furlongs and kept on increasing
the lead to take the race with ease. It was also the first ever
win for the jockey and a first for trainer S.D. Lalith since he
began training two years ago. This being the sixth race of the eight
event programme for the day, the owner, trainer and jockey did not
race in any of the previous five races.
But
they swept the board by winning the seventh and eight races with
If Looks Could Kill and Prince of South to win the The Sporting
Times Cup and Kandos Cup. The day’s proceedings began with
the George Ondaatjie Cup where Dhammika Attygalle’s Early
Light ridden by S. Selvaratnam and trained by Sridher Selvaratnam
cantered to the winning post.
This
was followed by a back to back double for owner Anura Delgoda and
trainer Sridher Selvaratnam when they won the Sumathi Cup and Carlsberg
Cup with I Am Mighty and Eulexite ridden by jockeys S. Selvaratnam
and V. Ashok Kumar. Incidentally trainer Selvaratnam completed a
treble with these wins.
The
Nescafe Cup and The Grand Hotel Cup were won by Mrs. Chamari Jayaratne’s
Cadmmium and Anuka Soza’s Sulanga trained by Sharath Kumar
and S. Aloysius with M.D. Kareem and H. Raja in the saddle.--
