Open
sale of animal flesh banned
Coinciding with the Buddha Jayanthi celebrations this week, the
selling of animal flesh in the open by the roadside will be banned
in the future
This proposal was approved by the Cabinet last week on a recommendation
by Minister Maithripala Sirisena. Under the ban to be imposed by
local government bodies, the vendors will have to sell the meat
in covered stalls. However this will not apply to the sale of fish.
In addition, all meat stalls and liquor bars will be closed from
May 9 to the 15 in view of Vesak.
Meanwhile,
in keeping with the campaign ‘Mathata Thitha Thabima’,
(a full stop to alcohol) under the Mahinda Chinthana programme some
liquor shop owners are handing back their liquor licences to the
Government, a statement from the President’s Office said.
Owner
of Kelani Valley Inn situated on Avissawella Road, Kaduwela, Cyril
Peiris handed over his liquor licence to the President at Temple
Trees on Friday, the statement said. The President thanked Mr. Peiris
saying his meritorious act was a good example especially at a time
Buddhists are celebrating the 2550 Buddha Jayanthi, it said.
