Vasu
invites lawyers to Temple Trees
UPFA Mayoral candidate Vasudeva Nanayakkara has invited lawyers
practising at the Colombo courts for a ‘get-together’
today at Temple Trees, the official residence of President Mahinda
Rajapaksa.Mr. Nanayakkara told The Sunday Times that President Rajapaksa
would also meet these lawyers at the function today from 7.00 to
9.00 pm. The invitation card states that “lawyer parliamentarians
including Ministers are expected to be present at this occasion”.
Some
of the lawyers invited practise in the Colombo courts, but don’t
have a vote for the Colombo Municipal Council, prompting opposition
lawyers to query whether Mr. Nanayakkara was guilty of ‘treating’,
an election offence.
Firebrand Nanayakkara said President Rajapaksa would be present
at his get-together as he too was from the UPFA. “I have spent
Rs. 30,000 to send my propaganda material and I have instructed
my supporters not to use state facilities for propaganda”,
he said.
Mr.
Nanayakkara has already been given wide publicity on state television
in contrast to other opposition candidates contesting the same election.
The get-together was earlier due to be held at the SLFI at Independence
Square but later shifted to Temple Trees.
