Uthayan
stood firm against onslaughts on press freedom
The Free Media Movement in a statement said it condemned in the
strongest of terms the attack on the Uthayan Newspaper. The FMM
said the newspaper never wavered in the face of attacks against
freedom of expression.
The FMM said:
The
Free Media Movement is shocked to report that Uthayan, the Tamil
language daily with the largest circulation in the Jaffna Peninsula
was attacked by unknown gunmen killing two media workers on the
eve of World Press Freedom day.
According
to reports from Jaffna five gunmen entered the main office of the
Uthayan newspaper at about 7:45 p.m., opened fire on the editorial
staff, killing two of them, including the newspaper’s marketing
manager and wounding two others.
The
gunmen shot at the computers in the office destroying them. The
marketing manger, Mr. Suresh, 35, and Mr. Ranjith, 24, were killed.
Mr. Uthayakumar and Thayakaran, two staffers who were injured, were
admitted to the Jaffna General hospital. The FMM condemns the attack
in the strongest of terms. For more than 20 years the Uthyan newspaper
has played a vital role in keeping the Jaffna people well informed
on politics, governance and the day to day happenings.
It
has faced and stood up against the many onslaughts on the freedom
of expression during the last two decades. The FMM urges the government
to provide the necessary security to the Uthayan newspaper to continue
its publication and initiate a speedy inquiry to bring to book whoever
is responsible for this attack.
