Avissawella
headless bodies: Two identified
By Chris Kamalendran
Two of the five headless bodies found in the Avissawella Police
area on April 27 were identified by their relatives as Sivasamy
Sukumar (41) and Mahalingam Narendran (31).
Sukumar
who worked as a trishaw driver in Armour Street for the past 14
years, was identified by his brother- in-law Ashokan. The dead man’s
wife S. Wasanthi said her husband left home for work on April 26
around 6.00 am. He mainly plied in the city and returned home for
his lunch, she said.
However,
since he left that morning, he failed to come home for two days
which prompted her to lodge a complaint with the Kotahena Police.
When they heard about the discovery of the five headless bodies,
they began to worry that Sukumar might be one of them. The Kotahena
Police informed them about the bodies and on May 1, Asokan had gone
to the Avissawella Police, Ms. Wasanthi said.
He
identified one of the bodies in the mortuary as that of Sukumar
from a silver ring that was removed from the body and was shown
to him by the Police, as well as an eczema that the dead man had
suffered on both legs.
Wasanthi and her mother too had identified the body the next day.
Mahalingam, expecting to go abroad for employment had gone to Colombo
in a friend’s vehicle to proceed to Kandy for a funeral, his
father Sandhanam Mahalingam said.
After
his arrival at Armour Street he had called two of his friends to
accompany him but they had refused. Since the two calls he had gone
missing. They identified the body by a burn mark on the leg.
Kegalle
Division SSP Wilfred Mahanayake confirmed that two of the bodies
were identified and that a DNA test would be conducted before their
release.
He added that all five bodies were brought to the Kalubowila Hospital
mortuary.
SSP
Mahanayake said he could not confirm reports that the other two
bodies had been identified as those of Kandiah Kumalingam of Mankulam
and Navaratnam Navaneetham of Thunukkai in the north, as claimed
by a Tamil website. He added that there had been no breakthrough
in the investigations into the murders so far.
