Athletes
gearing up for August spectacle

With the South Asian Federation Games down on the cards for August,
the local athletic fraternity is busy gearing themselves for the
big spectacle scheduled to be held in Colombo.
After
their exploits in Thailand last week seven of the top athletes are
due to take part in three more Grand Prix events in the Asian circuit.
The three events will be held on May 16 Bangkok, May 19th Bangalore
and May 28 Pune.
According
to AAA chief Derwin Perera the seven Athletes who will take part
at these three meets will be Rohan Pradeep Kumara and Prasanna Amerasekera
(400 metres), Damayanthi Dharsha (200 metres, women), Umanga Surendra
(100 metres), Indika Wijekone (3000 metres) Arjan Ratnayake ( 400
metres hurdles) and Menaka Wickremasinghe ( 400 metres, women).
In
addition to the above the local Athletics chief said “The
1st trial for the SAF games will take place on 27th May at the Sugathadasa
Stadium. After this trial the pool will be pruned down to two athletes
per discipline and there onwards the training in earnest for SAF
games will begin.
At
the same time the performances of those seven athletes who will
be taking part in the Asian Grand Prix circuit will be counted”.
