Military
Hospital to be relocated at Moratuwa
By Sanath Weerasuriya
The Military Hospital at Slave Island is to be
relocated at Moratuwa, hospital sources said.
The De Soyza Memorial Hospital premises in Lunawa
will be the location for the new Military Hospital. Four acres of
land in Uyana Road close to the Lunawa railway station houses the
partly deserted hospital, which is more than a hundred years old.
The main entrance to the hospital from the coast
road was closed a few years ago. Now only a few wards and the OPD
section are available for patients and the entrance is from Uyana
Road. The main building of the hospital was demolished and the land
so vacated was used to relocate tsunami victims from the area.
Last week, the Presidential Secretariat gave the
green light to acquire the hospital premises.
Following the suicide attempt on the Army Commander
last month, defence authorities have drafted a new security plan
for the Army Headquarters. Under this plan the bulk of administration
work and the military hospital will be relocated. The Welfare Department
of the Army is to be shifted to Anuradhapura, while the sports section
and the Medical Corps. will be relocated close to the respective
camps.
The OPD and the housing project for tsunami victims
at the De Soysa Hospital premises is to be moved elsewhere.
