Hijacked at gunpoint on Parliament road
By Malik Gunatilleke
A motorist driving from Union Place, Colombo 2
was carjacked at gunpoint on the Parliament road on Friday, police
said.
Talangama Police Inspector Kamal Gunawardena said
Indika Wettasinghe, the driver of a Nissan Sunny car, was going
back home from Colombo at around 9.45 p.m.
He had stopped at the roadside on the Parliament
road when three suspicious persons in a Nissan Bluebird pulled up
next to his vehicle.
The driver of the Bluebird remained in his seat
while the other two got down from the vehicle and asked Wettasinghe
for directions to Kaduwela. Wettasinghe then told them that he too
was headed in that direction and said they could follow him.
One of the men then pulled out a pistol and asked
Wettasinghe for the keys of the vehicle. The two carjackers got
into Wettasinghe’s car and drove away.
Wettasinghe’s vehicle was a rented car which
had been used by him for just over two-and-a-half months. He did
not recall the vehicle’s number plate when he reported the
incident to the Talangama Police.
He then proceeded to the rental shop ‘High
Drive’ to bring a representative to the police station with
the necessary information to file a report.
Inspector Gunawardena told The Sunday Times that
the vehicle number was WP-HP-9314 and the value of the car was estimated
to be Rs. 1.5 million.
He also said such incidents were rare in that
area and added that police were doing all they could to bring the
criminals to justice. “No suspects have been taken into custody
but SSP Nugegoda, SP Talangama and OIC Colombo Fort are also involved
in the investigation,” he said.
