Badulla Police said they arrested, on suspicion,
a 26-year-old woman living in the house. Investigations revealed
she was a boarder in the house and was a resident of Weeriyapura
in Badulla.
The search began after Badulla Chief Inspector
U.N.P. Liyanage received a tip-off giving the location of a house
where a woman was keeping an infant.
According to police, the woman had first attempted
to mislead them saying the child was hers. When that failed, she
told police she had lost a child of her own and stole the infant
to compensate for the loss.
The infant was brought back to the Badulla hospital
around midnight.
It was found the infant was born to 31-year-old
K.Chandima last Tuesday.
She said she kept the child on the hospital bed
and went for a bath. On her return she found some inmates fondling
the infant. The suspect was among them and had carried the child
for a short while. The mother had gone again to get her wounds dressed
and found her child missing on her return.
Hospital authorities had then alerted the Badulla
Police who received information that a woman was seen with the child
boarding a bus bound for Mahiyangana. Mahiyangana and Kandaketiya
police had then joined the search.
The search ended when the final tip-off helped
in finding the child around midnight.
