Grand old party turns 60
The United National Party, which was formed in
September 1946, will hold a special programme to celebrate its 60th
anniversary from September 1 to September 6 with the theme, ‘The
United National Party that formed a unified nation’, a UNP
spokesman said.
The celebration will begin with the first three
days - September 1 to September 3 - being dedicated to religious
activities honouring the faiths of the Buddhist, Christian, Muslim
and Hindu communities.
All loyal members of the UNP who had sacrificed
their lives for the party at the hands of the JVP and the LTTE will
be remembered with a special event to be held at the Sirikotha UNP
headquarters at 10 a.m. on September 4.
The celebrations will conclude on September 5
with a felicitation ceremony attended by the leading members of
the party where 10 devoted members of the UNP will receive medals
of gratitude for their loyalty and support to the party. Apart from
the festivity, there would be a district Sinhala and Tamil essay
competition held on September 19 on the official celebratory theme.
The finals will be held on October 20 - D.S. Senanayake’s
birth anniversary - when the winners would each receive a prize
and certificate.
